The four Langara College programs in Health Sciences offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of health, illness, and disease in human communities. Health is one of the largest employment sectors in the country, and is anticipated to grow at a faster than average rate. Employment options are diverse, and extend far beyond serving as doctors or nurses.  Upon successful completion, students of Health Sciences programs will have gained a strong basic background in this rapidly changing field.

Requirements:-

  • Successful completion of a BC secondary program (Grade 12) or the equivalent, or
  • Be at least 19 years of age by the first day of the first semester of attendance, or
  • Successful completion of an A.B.E. (Adult Basic Education) or G.E.D. (General Educational Development) program.
  • To be considered for conditional admission, students must submit an Appeal for Admission and Readmission Form and ensure that the following information is received by Registrar and Enrolment Services:
    1. Students must have completed the online PSI Selections form and indicated that their transcript be sent electronically to Langara AND their PEN must be on file at the College. An official Ministry of Education paper transcript must be submitted if grades are not received electronically.
    2. Students must submit an interim transcript of the course that they are completing with a grade of at least 60%.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older
  • A minimum of six (6) Grade 12 courses with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including three (3) required U level courses and three (3) additional U or M level courses ( Higher averages are often required for admission due to competition for available spaces in the program.)
  • The following Grade 12 U courses are required:
    • English (ENG4U)
    • One (1) Grade 12 Mathematics course with a minimum average of 70% from the following: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) OR Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) OR Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U)

OSSD or equivalent, ENG4C or ENG4U, any Gr 11 Math (C) or (U), One (1) of the following sciences: Biology: Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SBI 3C, SBI 3U, SBI 4U); Chemistry: Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SCH 3U, SCH 4U, SCH 4C); Physics: Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SPH 3U, SPH 4U, SPH 4C)

If English is not  first language  must either provide proof of English competency or take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  must have a minimum overall band score of 5.5 on IELTS, or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer scored) or 80 IBT (internet based) to be admitted to a postsecondary program at the college. SPP in India requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0

Requirements:-

  1. A TB skin test is compulsory. TB testing must be done within three months of program start and students must provide documentation of this prior to the start of the first practicum or experience with public clients. Students are responsible for the cost of this test. An additional TB skin test is required after each possible exposure to TB and/or travel within an area that there is a known prevalence of TB.
  2. Students are highly recommended to maintain current immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines. Failure to comply with immunization guidelines could result in the health care organization or the college barring the individual from the clinical/practicum setting until proof of immunity is provided and/or until a communicable disease outbreak is declared over. This could impact a student’s ability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement course and/or a clinical/practicum.
  3. Yearly respirator mask ‘fit-testing’. Fitting will be completed in the program and students will be responsible for associated costs.
  4. Standard First Aid certificate (valid for 3 years) AND CPR Level ‘C’ (annual CPR recertification is required). Can be obtained from Alert First Aid, St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, HeartSafe and community and recreation centres.
  5. Criminal Record Check: During this program,  may be working with children and/or vulnerable adults. In order to participate in work integrated learning experiences, such as a practicum or work term,  will need to complete a criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice for Camosun College. Camosun will email  with information on how to complete the Criminal Record Check (CRC) process.
  6. Hepatitis B and the flu vaccines are highly recommended and are available at  local health clinic or through  physician.

  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology course before the first day of classes (or online learning module).
  • Indication of clinical site preferences and acceptance of the final assigned clinical site selections.
  • It is required that students have yearly respirator mask ‘fit-testing’ done. Fitting will be completed in the program and students will be responsible for completing this process prior to the first clinical experience and for any associated costs.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is required prior to the first clinical placement. Annual recertification of CPR Level C must be maintained throughout the program. Students will be responsible for the cost of this certification.

  •  Must complete all program courses achieving an overall cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in order to graduate with a Diploma in Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology.
  •  Must additionally complete successfully one work term (CHEM 290) in order to graduate with a Diploma in Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology, Internship Designation. Students pursuing the Internship designation will be required to complete four (4) seminar courses and one (1) work term course. please consult with the Chair to discuss the work term course that will best meet their career and educational goals.

  • Minimum 70% in BIOL 090 or Biology 12
  • Minimum 70% in CHEM 080 or Chemistry 11
  • Minimum 70% in MATH 080, MATH 082 or MATH 090 or Math 11, as of 2013 in Foundations or
  • Pre-Calculus Math 11 or 12
  • Minimum 70% in English 090 or English 12 or equivalent
  • Completion of CASPer testing and submission of results to Registration.
  • There are generally only 4 available times to take this assessment in January and February of
  • each year.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

  • Students whose first language is not English may be required to undergo the International  English Language Testing System (IELTS). An overall score of 6.5 in all bands is required to enter the program.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange this assessment through Student Services or an education advisor at the College.
