Requirements:-

In addition to meeting the general admission requirements indicated in the Admissions section of this calendar, applicants to this program must also satisfy the following specific course requirements (or equivalencies):

  • 60 per cent minimum in English Language Arts (ELA) 30-1 or 70 per cent in ELA 30-2
  • 60 per cent minimum in Math 20-1 or a higher level math
  • 60 per cent minimum in Biology 30 or C- in BIO-1160 (Anatomy and Physiology I) at Lethbridge College, or equivalent

Admission is competitive and is based on a point system for percentages in biology, math and English. More points will be awarded for higher grades and for the higher levels of math and English (i.e. 30-1). The points are then cumulative to determine placement for competitive entry. English language proficiency requirements for Practical Nursing program

In addition to the academic requirements, if English is not your first language, English Language Proficiency (ELP) must be demonstrated within the last two (2) years prior to the application. Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic with a minimum band score of 6.5 in speaking, 6.5 in listening, 6.0 in reading and 6.5 in writing
  • TOEFL internet-based test score with a minimum score of 22 in speaking, 23 in listening, 21 in reading and 25 in writing
  • Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of three (3) years of full-time secondary education at a school where English was the principal language of instruction
  • Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of one (1) year of full-time post-secondary education at a school where English was the principal language of instruction.

The Practical Nursing program philosophy is based on a set of values and beliefs about the client, health, caring, nursing and the role that teaching and learning play in enabling individuals, families and groups to achieve health outcomes

Requirements:-

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
• Grade 12 ENG4C
• Grade 11 Foundations for College Math (C) MBF3C
• Grade 11 Biology (C) SBI3C
• Grade 12 Chemistry (C) SCH4C or Grade 11 Chemistry (U) SCH3U
Or mature student status. Mature students must still meet all program prerequisites in the sciences.
This program has more applications than seats available. Applications will be ranked based on the average
of the required courses. Beginning in September 2015 an average of 65% in the required courses will be
required for applications to be considered.
Personal Support Worker is no longer a direct entry into the Practical Nursing Program.
Personal Support Worker graduates would still require:
• Grade 12 Chemistry (C) SCH4C or Grade 11 Chemistry (U) SCH3U, and
• Grade 11 Foundations for College Math (C) MBF3C
Successful completion of both PSW108 and PSW118, however, will be accepted for Grade 11 Biology (C)
SBI3C.

Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.
– English 12 or equivalent with a grade of C+ OR Technical Communications 12 with a grade of B+. Note that First Peoples 12, English 099 Foundational Writing, and English 050 Provincial English are regarded as the equivalent of English 12. If English is not your first language, see below for English-as-an-Additional-Language (or ESL) testing requirements.
– Math 11 Principles with a grade of C, Math 11 Foundations with a grade of C (commencing 2012), OR Math 040 Advanced Algebraic Mathematics with a grade of C. If Math 11 requirements are over 10 years old, Grade 11.9 proficiency on numeracy sections (Number Operations and Problem Solving) of the CAAT (Canadian Adult Achievement Test) is required.
– Biology 12 (Human Biology) with a grade of C or Biology 050 Provincial Biology (Human) with a grade of C, within 10 years.
– English as an Additional Language (or ESL) requirements are set by the minimum standards of the Practical Nursing Program Provincial Curriculum:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Academic Version with minimum scores of:
– Overall Band Score: 7.5

– Listening: 8.0
– Reading: 7.0
– Writing: 7.5

Canadian English Language Benchmarks Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) with minimum scores of:

The Georgian College Nursing Program philosophy and curriculum incorporate and utilize the concepts of caring as the basis of nursing practice. The students and faculty work together to explore nursing knowledge and caring theory. In the classroom, students in collaborative groups, work through learning activities and focus on the lived experiences of individuals, families, and groups. Knowledge from the program courses is integrated into the care of clients, families, and groups in a variety of settings.

Requirements:-

  • OSS Curriculum: OSSD or equivalent with Grade 12 English (C), or (U), (ENG4C, ENG4U); plus any Grade 12 College Mathematics (MAP4C or MCT4C) or any Grade 12 University Mathematics; plus Grade 11 College or Grade 11 or 12 University Biology (SBI3C, SBI3U, SBI4U); plus Grade 12 College or Grade 11 or 12 University Chemistry (SCH4C, SCH4U, SCH3U) OR Grade 12 College or Grade 11 or 12 University Physics (SPH3U, SPH4C, SPH4U)

Non-Secondary school applicants (19 years or older):

  • Any credit Communication course and most credit mathematics, and biology and chemistry or physics courses taken at Georgian College
  • College preparatory programs including those taken at Georgian College: Pre-health Sciences.
  • Equivalent courses in English and mathematics, and biology and chemistry or physics taken through secondary school or Independent Learning Centres (at the general, advanced, college or university level)
  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) program with communications and mathematics, and biology and chemistry or physics
  • Mature student testing in English and mathematics, and testing/challenge exam in biology and chemistry or physics that meets the minimum standards for admission (available through most testing services).
  • Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) plus biology and chemistry or physics
  • English, Literature or Communication and mathematics credit courses and most biology and chemistry or physics credit courses from accredited colleges/universities
  • If home schooled, applicants can write the mature student testing in English and mathematics, and testing/challenge exam in biology and chemistry or physics that meets the minimum standards for admission (available through testing services).

Requirements:-

  1. A TB skin test is compulsory. TB testing must be done within three months of program start and students must provide documentation of this prior to the start of the first practicum or experience with public clients. Students are responsible for the cost of this test. An additional TB skin test is required after each possible exposure to TB and/or travel within an area that there is a known prevalence of TB.
  2. Students are highly recommended to maintain current immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines. Failure to comply with immunization guidelines could result in the health care organization or the college barring the individual from the clinical/practicum setting until proof of immunity is provided and/or until a communicable disease outbreak is declared over. This could impact a student’s ability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement course and/or a clinical/practicum.
  3. Yearly respirator mask ‘fit-testing’. Fitting will be completed in the program and students will be responsible for associated costs.
  4. Standard First Aid certificate (valid for 3 years) AND CPR Level ‘C’ (annual CPR recertification is required). Can be obtained from Alert First Aid, St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, HeartSafe and community and recreation centres.
  5. Criminal Record Check: During this program,  may be working with children and/or vulnerable adults. In order to participate in work integrated learning experiences, such as a practicum or work term,  will need to complete a criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice for Camosun College. Camosun will email  with information on how to complete the Criminal Record Check (CRC) process.
  6. Hepatitis B and the flu vaccines are highly recommended and are available at  local health clinic or through  physician.
