The School of Chemistry is one of the largest in the UK and is an internationally recognised centre of teaching and research. Currently there are over 250 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, from many different countries, working with more than 60 academic staff on a wide range of research themes. Extensive collaborations with science-based industries and leading international academic centres ensure that research in Bristol remains at the frontier of science.

You will study a wide variety of courses, starting with those focused on the origins of life, the basics of ecological theory, and global environmental processes. You will examine topics such as biodiversity, conservation management and land-use, while also gaining a broad understanding of physical, chemical and biological sciences.

Later in the programme you will explore methods used in ecological and environmental analysis and topics such as, water resource management, land use, environmental pollution and environmental modelling. You will be taught by staff involved in high-level research in these subject areas. You will have the opportunity to undertake research projects, including a long independent research project in your final year, and will complete field and laboratory assignments, including at least three week-long field trips in Scotland.

The programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to tackle environmental issues, design robust strategies for sample collection, make ecological and environmental measurements, evaluate the significance of results and manage conservation and environmental protection projects.

The human population is now more than six billion, and we face problems of over-exploitation of natural resources, rapid climate change, loss of biodiversity and habitat degradation. It is impossible to understand and tackle these issues without knowledge of ecology and environmental science. The Ecological and Environmental Science degree programme focuses on the study of natural and managed ecosystems from an ecological and environmental perspective so we can learn from the past, understand the present and influence the future. A key outcome is the ability of graduates to use their powers of observation, analysis and creativity to make appropriate decisions in situations characterised by change and uncertain

SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S5 or ABBBB/AABB from S4-S6, to include two of Biology*, Chemistry*, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Managing Environmental Resources, Mathematics* and Physics*; with National 5 Mathematics at Grade B (*include at least one).
A Levels: ABB in one sitting, to include two from Biology*, Chemistry*, Mathematics*, Physics*, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology; with GCSE Mathematics at Grade B (*include at least one).
IB: 32 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 555 at HL to include two of Biology*, Chemistry*, Mathematics*, Physics*, Geology or Geography (*include at least one).

English language tests:

If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:

IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
TOEFL-iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section

The PhD is offered by the Department of Chemistry as a full-time period of research and introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge. (Applications from part-time students may also be considered but there are attendance requirements and you will need to live close enough to Cambridge to fulfil these.)

Educational aims of the PhD programme:

to give students with relevant experience at Master’s level the opportunity to carry out focussed research in the discipline under close supervision; and
to give students the opportunity to acquire or develop skills and expertise relevant to their research interests
to give students training in transferable skills to broaden their horizon above and beyond the focus of their research in the Department.

Business plays a major role in the structure and functioning of contemporary society. Students will develop an appreciation and understanding of how to achieve organizational objectives in an often diverse and turbulent external environment. Lectures are augmented by seminars, research projects and computer simulations. Students are encouraged to take electives from the Social Sciences and Humanities.

The GCIB is a fast paced, intense, integrated, full-time, cohort based program. Depending on graduating grade point average, successful graduates can move onto a Faculty of Management graduate diploma, or other graduate programs.
